Julio.Augusto. Zachrisson; Sincretismos: 1972- 2000
27.09.2023 - 05.11.2023

Julio Augusto Zachrisson: Sincretismos:1972-2000, is the first exhibition at a gallery in Spain in 15 years, and the first exhibition after the death of the artist on December 18, 2021, at the age of 94, in Madrid. Memoria presents an exhibition that brings together a dozen works by the Panamanian artist between 1972 and 2000, accompanied by two works by José Luis Cuevas (Mexico City, 1934-2017). This review adds to the recent anthological exhibitions held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid and at the Museum of Contemporary Art in his native Panama between 2020 and 2021.

The project, reflects Zachrisson's relationship with Mesoamerica and with artists such as José Luis Cuevas, who contributes with two pieces from the 1970s to the curatorial proposal.A look at his experience and initiation trip to Mexico in the 1950s would mark his art, through the muralist imprint, the late surrealisms of Remedios Varó or Leonora Carrington, as well as the incipient Rupture Movement in its figurative aspect of dreamlike motifs close to Magical Realisms.

Zachrisson acts as a traveler through the underground worlds, like a chronicler who returns from his dream journey with delicious and always different findings. It is the very force of the images that imposes itself on the contemplator, without overloading the expression. It is precisely these communicating vessels, not excessively inserted in the history of recent art, that this exhibition proposal seeks to awaken.
