Juan Castillo: Te devuelvo tu imagen

16.11.2023 - 25.02.2024

Fundamental artist of the Chilean Escena Avanzada Juan Castillo fuses the social and art and the problem of Latin American identity. His work brings together many of his aesthetic concerns in an inescapable way. He addresses the phenomena of transculturation and hybridity that shape individuals in contemporary societies.

On this occasion, MEMORIA proposes a curatorial project that reviews the different visual strategies of Juan Castillo, marked by experimentality within the artistic and social discourses during the Pinochet Dictatorship (1973-1990), where together with Diamela Eltit, Fernando Balcells , Raúl Zurita and Lotty Rosenfield, as part of C.A.D.A., would provoke a semantic break in the visual arts to come.

For this individual exhibition Juan Castillo will present a dialogue that articulates different ideas-forces of his most emblematic bodies of work such as: Minimal Baroque, Frankenstein and Emotional Geometry. Te devuelvo tu imagen, brings us closer to the aesthetic proposals of Juan Castillo, which repeats constantly, and that are linked to his convictions about the relationship of art with life, the dignity of the displaced, heartbreak and absences. They are works that encompass multitudes of timelines and face-landscapes that the artist imagines, transfigures and connects with each other.
